Christians Through and Through

The Fourth of July was a fun time at our house this year. We had a bunch of folks over, snacked a lot, barbequed and sat around until firework time. Life is good!

It wasn’t until someone brought up a church activity that I realized about half the people sitting around the fire trying to make darkness happen sooner, belong to the group identified as “unchurched”. Someone from the “churched” camp mentioned a UMC group was planning a wine tasting excursion. A voice piped up, “I hope they don’t take the church bus!” (Gentle laughter, it’s not that funny). Then Kim, my adamantly unchurched, beloved friend and sister-in-law, added, “Christians SHOULD take their bus wine tasting! If you’re going to do it, do it with your head held high!”

Making Jesus Real

Dear Friends,

At annual conference, the District Formerly Known as Eastern became the Snake River District. I had a number of suggestions for what we could rename the Western District– everything from the Supreme Power District to the Thank you, Jesus District. Even though we will not rename ourselves this – I want to propose a simple phrase for keeping ourselves focused – the Make Jesus Real district.

As I enter my seventh year among you, I rejoice in all the ways that Jesus is being made real already throughout the district. Making Jesus real is happening across the district through significant hunger ministries, congregations seeking through prayer and discernment God’s purpose for them, moving out of the four walls of the church in an increased engagement with the community, and a dawning awareness of our need to reach out to those who have not yet heard the Good News.
