Speaking Personally - July 2010 PDF Print E-mail

Donna Pritchard, Southern District Supeintendent

I met an interesting woman recently, a relatively new neighbor who spent 36 years working as a Clinical Psychologist. She told me that in all those years of providing therapy to a wide range of clients, and even of training other therapists, she felt like she kept seeing the same things over and over again. Whether the problem was depression or anxiety, narcissism or neurosis of one kind or another, she felt like all the suffering could be laid at the feet of three simple thoughts:

   1) "What if?" ... You know how it goes, that nagging doubt which circles around in your head, taunting you to try and reconstruct the past. "What if I had taken another job? What if my husband had not left? What if I had gone in on that land deal 20 years ago? What if....?" (you can fill in the blank).

Who, Me? PDF Print E-mail

This year’s Annual Conference, for the first time ever, was sited at the Salem Conference Center, quite a change from our usual digs at Willamette University. The theme was Boldly Making Disciples of Jesus Christ: Embracing Change, and there were many new things to experience. New songs written by Rev. David King, new ideas from Adam Hamilton for Leading Beyond the Walls, new ways of sharing meals, new round tables! If we hadn’t really considered how to Rethink Church, I’m sure that after Annual Conference most of us realized that change was happening in real time, right before our eyes.

Grocery Store for the Needy a Vital Ministry PDF Print E-mail

The South Douglas (County) Food Bank was begun by United Steel Workers Union Local 5074 in Tri-City, Oregon, after the Riddle Hanna Nickel Mine ceased operation in 1986.  Initially begun as an outreach effort for laid-off miners, after struggling for a year to meet demand, Local 5074 was going to cease service when Methodists from the Myrtle Creek United Methodist Church made a concerted effort to take over operation and offer the service to everyone in need.  Thus, by 1987, the Food Bank was distributing food boxes to South County residents and continued to do so until 1998 when increased demand eventually outstripped the ability of the church basement to facilitate the ministry.  The service moved into various locations over the next seven years throughout the South County area and set up operations in Tri-City, Myrtle Creek, and Riddle.

Lay Speaking - The Best Kept United Methodist Secret! PDF Print E-mail

The United Methodist Lay Speaking Program offers a wealth of opportunities for the local church.  It provides a place for individuals seeking growth in the areas of leadership and their personal spiritual journey.  For clergy serving in the local church, a cadre of trained lay leaders can be a tremendous support by providing people ready to take on a variety of leadership roles, thus strengthening the entire ministry of the church.  Below are articles about the Lay Speaking program from three points of view  -  from a clergy serving a local church, from a certified lay speaker and from our district director of lay speaking.
