You asked how our church was responding to the Haiti devastation. Hillsboro UMC took a special offering the Sunday after the earthquake hit and began collecting items for health kits. That collection has continued each week since. I don't know how many have been made and/or sent. Christine Webb. our Famiily Ministries Coordinator, has been spearheading that effort. She is a dynamo! I know we collected $1,900 on that first Sunday special offering.

You asked for stories of what our churches are doing for Haiti. Here's what the Eagle UMC has been doing.
Someone from World Vision recently said that, "Due to the recent earthquake, Haiti will be known as a nation of orphans and amputees." Motivated by those words and that reality, our church raised $9,265.40 for the Free Wheelchair Mission. That comes to 156+ wheelchairs. Of course, they won't get there right away, but they will be needed. These funds were in addition to $5,526 we raised for Haiti to give through UMCOR.
God Bless,
Rev, John A. Grimsted, Eagle United Methodist Church
Greetings and peace to you in this season of Christ’s light and hope!
Attached is a letter sent to us by the Rev. Gesner Paul, President of the Methodist Church of Haiti. It expresses thanksgiving from the Church in Haiti for the response UMCOR is leading after the devastation of the earthquake.
We urge you to share this letter with your local churches and volunteer networks. The letter is helpful in clarifying both the need for volunteers in the future and the wisdom of responding at the most appropriate time.
We invite you to continue your prayerful support and encouragement for the people of Haiti as we continue planning for the most effective response by the United Methodist Church.
Grace and Peace,
Bishop Joel N. Martinez
Interim, General Secretary
Bishop Janice R. Huie
Chairperson of Health & Relief, UMCOR
Canby United Methodist is collecting through February, items to assemble health kits as requested by UMCOR. Our adult Sunday School class is facilitating this, and will assemble the kits and then transfer them to Rose City Park UMC via our Pastor, Bill Taylor, who lives nearer that neighborhood then the rest of the congregation does. We applaud Pastor Bill's willingness to facilitate this. We are also strongly considering making our VBS offering this coming June as School kits and Layette kits, which would also go to UMCOR.
Sam Brown, co-chair of the missions committee at Rose City Park United Methodist Church in Portland is looking for other churches that are interested in coordinating the shipment of health kits to the United Methodist Committee on Relief western resource depot in Salt Lake City, Utah. The depot is preparing to send out its first shipment of 23,000 kits to Haiti and is looking to restock supplies for future shipments. Both Health Kits and Layette Kits are needed.
If your church is preparing kits, and would like to coordinate the shipment to the depot, contact Sam at
