Conference Statement Regarding Rev. David Weekley PDF Print E-mail

Statement By Oregon-Idaho Annual Conference regarding Rev. David Weekley sharing his story as a transgender man:

Rev. David Weekley is an ordained elder in The United Methodist Church in good standing. The public knowledge of his status as a transgender man does not change this in any way.

The United Methodist Church does not prohibit transgendered persons from ordination in the church. Rev. Weekley was evaluated and supported for ordination by his local church, District Committee on Ordained Ministry, and Conference Board of Ordained Ministry.

Bishop Robert T. Hoshibata, Episcopal leader of the Oregon-Idaho Annual (regional) Conference has this to share:

“We believe that God has called David Weekley to serve as an elder in The United Methodist Church. In response to God’s call, Reverend Weekley has effectively served his congregations for 27 years. He is choosing now to share this earlier part of his life journey honestly and openly. This decision does not, in any way, change his faith or his commitment to the ministry to which he was ordained, nor does it change his status as an elder in good standing.. I prayerfully ask that his congregation, his colleagues and The United Methodist Church continue to uphold him and his family at this time.”

Rev. Weekley was ordained as an elder in full connection in 1984 and has served congregations in Shoshone and Richfield, Idaho; Jason Lee in Salem; Corvallis; Forest Grove; and Christ Church, Montavilla and Epworth in the Portland area.
