Established in Salem OR in 1998, NHTS serves students from mainline denominations who wish to begin graduate studies to earn the Master of Divinity degree without disrupting their work or family life.

Beginning January 17, 2003 with "Introduction to Christian Ethics," the new certificate will be offered to those completing four courses of study, including three core courses (e.g.; Theology, Christian Education, Hebrew Bible, New Testament, Christian Ethics and History of Christianity I and II) and one in practical theology. This program will be incorporated into the same classes offered Master of Divinity candidates, and will allow students enough flexibility to earn the certificate at a comfortable pace. Classes are held in six "mini-terms" with sessions on Fridays and Saturdays. During June and July, classes are offered in a two-week intensive format.
