In 1981 Clergymates established an Emergency Fund for spouses of appointed clergy who are:
a) in the midst of divorce proceedings,
b) close to divorce proceedings,
c) recommended by the DS as needing emergency help for counseling or short-term time away from a troubled marriage.
In 1998 the group voted to include grants for those who have been widowed and in financial need. The fund provides grants up to $1,500 per individual for such things as food, moving expenses, housing security deposits, child care, temporary health insurance, retraining, etc.In 1990 the Collins Foundation provided grant money to establish an endowment fund.An annual fund drive continues to grow the general fund and the endowment fund to insure the continuation of these emergency funds.
All clergy mates are encouraged to make a yearly contribution to one or both funds. Applications may be obtained from a Clergymates Emergency Fund officer or from any District Superintendent. The application is returned to the DS. The application is reviewed in confidence and the amount of the grant is determined by a committee of three Clergymates, the DS and a member of the Board of Ordained Ministry.The Emergency Fund committee currently includes Co-chairs:
